Coughing in your first vape sessions is common and usually fixable in a day. Here’s the diagnosis.
Why it happens
Your airways are used to smoke, not vapour — the sensation, temperature and particle profile are different. Coughing is your throat recalibrating, not a danger sign. Most ex-smokers stop coughing within the first week.
Fix 1: Slow down the draw
Cigarette-style hard, fast drags hit the throat with a burst of vapour. Draw slower and gentler — let vapour roll in over two seconds instead of snapping it in.
Fix 2: Try mouth-to-lung
Inhale to your mouth first, pause a beat, then breathe in. The air mixing softens the throat hit dramatically. Direct-to-lung inhales are the top cause of beginner coughing.
Fix 3: Choose cooler profiles
Menthol and fruit-ice flavours soothe rather than irritate — many coughing beginners switch to mint and never look back. Devices like the IGET Moon also run cooler than compact stick formats.
Fix 4: Take smaller first puffs
Prime with two or three tiny “sips” before any full draw. It wakes the coil gently and warms your throat to the sensation.
Fix 5: Hydrate
Propylene glycol in e-liquid is a moisture magnet — it dries the mouth and throat. Water on hand fixes half of all vape cough sessions on its own.
When it’s not normal
Persistent coughing beyond a couple of weeks, coughing with chest tightness or wheeze deserves a GP visit — get anything ongoing checked properly.
