It looks like a plastic tube, but a disposable vape is a complete micro-system. Here’s what’s inside and how the parts work together.
The four core parts
1. Battery: a lithium cell holding enough energy for the device’s rated puffs. It’s the heaviest part — that weight you feel is the power source.
2. E-liquid reservoir: a saturated foam or chamber holding several millilitres of flavoured nicotine liquid, sealed for freshness.
3. Coil and wick: the wick (usually cotton or porous ceramic) pulls liquid to a tiny wire coil. When you draw, the coil heats for a second or two and flash-vaporises the liquid. Modern mesh coils spread heat evenly for better flavour.
4. Airflow sensor: the “brain”. It detects your draw and fires the coil automatically — that’s why there’s no button.
What happens in one puff
- You inhale, creating airflow through the device.
- The sensor fires the battery through the coil for about a second.
- The coil at 200°C+ turns liquid into vapour.
- Vapour travels through the mouthpiece channel to you.
- When you stop, the sensor cuts power instantly.
Why devices “fade” near the end
As liquid drops, the wick covers less thoroughly and vapour thins. When liquid is gone, the dry wick scorches — that burnt taste is your tank gauge.
